A Sports Columnist and patient on “Live Surgery” segment – NBC Today Show
My name is Christopher Reid and I am here for the ICL surgery. I’ve chose to have this surgery because I have really bad eye sight, I mean really bad. For the last many, many years I’ve been wearing contact lenses and I was just a little bit concerned over the years that the damage that the contact lens might be doing to my eyes. And my eyes are so bad that, you know, glasses aren’t really an option in my profession, you know, ladies don’t really be diggin’ the Coke bottles unless you’re a scientist, and I’m not a scientist, yet! You know, there were other surgery options that were discussed and were considered, after having spoke with the doctor, I realized that LASIK in and of itself that didn’t suit me and a lot of that had to do with the fact that my eye sight was that bad. One of the reasons we began to discuss the ICL was that it seemed better suited and also, you’re in they’re working—fine, if they’re not, you’re back and they out. And you’re, at the very least, back to square one, you’re back the way you were. With the LASIK, I think once they burn off whatever they have to burn off, that’s gone! I felt more comfortable with it, I felt like it gave us a way out if, you know, something didn’t go the way we anticipated, if it didn’t work out, if it didn’t fit, if it didn’t agree with these big old eyes! I had an opportunity to speak with a young lady who had just had the surgery, like you know, 10 minutes previous, so I had a chance to speak with her at length. Right before I came in here, I spoke with another young man who had just gotten the surgery and just got a great vibe off of them, they’re very pleased with it. I was here yesterday actually, picking up some eye drops and there was a lady who recently had it who was just marveling at her improved eye sight. And I love an opportunity to experience that. My expectations coming out of surgery, well, you know, five minutes out I want to be able to read the Declaration of Independence from some guy sitting on top of the Hollywood sign from here.
Yea, I’m feeling great post-op. I was able to see immediately after the operation, I could actually look up and see the doctor clearly, you know, read the clock on the wall, read stuff on the wall that I, you know, prior would have had a difficult time doing that. The procedure takes such a short time that before you know it, its over. I think that’s another good thing that people should probably know and learn about the surgery, I think it was one of the more appealing parts of it was that, you know, its quick, you know, you’re not knocked out for hours. Before I knew it, the doc was like “you did great, its over!” We’re happy, I can see clearly now the haze is gone!
I think that, it’s kind of weird in situations like this, where every prediction that the doctor put out there actually kinda came to pass. I’ve been, my eye sight is incredible, I’m seeing things I haven’t seen in years, distance, reading. Prior to this I didn’t like driving at night a whole lot and invariable I end up having to being an entertainer or if I’m doing a stand up gig somewhere. I would have trouble seeing signs, having to be virtually right underneath or right near the sign in order to see something, you know, that’s pretty dangerous if you have to get off somewhere, get off on an exit. Those problems simply don’t exist any more. It’s been pretty amazing; I mean that’s the one thing I can describe, I even kind of test myself. I’ll look across the room to see if I can read something and these are things that I know, that even through contact lenses or wearing glasses years ago I would not be able to see and read. So, its kind of, you know it’s pretty amazing. You just see the difference and feel the difference immediately; you know you wake up, if I’m laying down on the couch watching television, there’s, I see every aspect of what’s on television now, I mean, I watch a lot of CNN so, you know, they’ve always got a lot of stuff going and there’s the crawl on the bottom, and if I’m watching Sports Center they’ve got stuff on the side, they’ve got stuff on the bottom. And I can recall in years past, you know, sometimes you got to get up and squint and look over here and really lean up towards the television in order to see some of these things, but that just doesn’t exist any more. And the way they’ve specifically, kind of calibrated the lenses in my eye, you know, this one for distance, this one for reading, I mean I can go from looking at something at a distance to just reading the smallest print, you know, right in front of me at a very comfortable distance and that’s just not something I was able to do before. I had no idea, I had no idea what I was missing, you know, colors and just the peripheral vision and distance and you know, reading stuff, you know, I feel like I got a pair of brand new eyes which I guess technically I do. Literally the quality of my life has kind of improved in the last week and a half and I’m pretty excited and I’m at the point now the doctor said where I can kind of get back to everything that I normally do, I can get back to working out, I can get back to everything I’m used to doing. I had no problems you know, putting Visian lenses in my eye. If I’m living proof that it works, so be it; it’s working for me wonderfully. You know I feel like I’ve got a whole new lease on life, a whole new world! Thank you.
